To describe in historical terms some of the formal elements in that art which we call Elizabethan tragedy is the general objective of this book. I expect, and am prepared to respect, an immediate. The first English tragedy, Gorboduc (), by Thomas Sackville and Thomas Norton, is a chain of slaughter and revenge written in direct imitation of Seneca. (As it happens, Gorboduc does follow the form as well as the subject matter of Senecan tragedy: but only a very few other English plays—e.g.

Tragedy as Drama The idea that tragedy was a kind of drama was still a new one in mid-Tudor England. In fact it was Sackville himself, in collaboration with a fellow Inner Templar, Thomas Norton, who wrote the first neoclassical tragic drama in English, The Tragedy of Gorboduc, which was performed at the Inner Temple in Tragedy - Tragedy - The long hiatus: The Roman world failed to revive tragedy. Similarities Between Gorboduc and King Lear. First, it should be noted that indeed there are similarities between Gorboduc and King Lear. Presumably, Shakespeare took the former as the basis for his tragedy. When looking at the two plots in a more detail, it should be admitted that there is a certain pattern that unites the two works. Because of the well sounding Phrases and speeches incorporated throughout Gorboduc — the first English revenge tragedy — Sir Philip Sidney believes that this tragedy effectively exemplifies the Senecan style.
